Multiplication Word Problems WorksheetsFree Printable PDF — Grades 3–5
Most children learn multiplication as 'equal groups' — and stop there. But array and scaling problems use the same operation and appear frequently from Grade 4 onward. These worksheets cover all three so children aren't caught off-guard.
Three multiplication structures
Most worksheets only teach
one type of multiplication problem.
Equal-groups problems are the easiest to write and the most common. But CBSE Class 4–5 assessments include all three structures. Children who haven't practised arrays and multiplicative comparison fail these problems even when their multiplication is fluent.
Equal groups
'There are 5 boxes with 9 pencils in each box. How many pencils altogether?' Number of groups × size of each group = total. This is the first multiplication structure children learn and the most recognisable. Easy and medium difficulty worksheets use this type most heavily.
Array
'A hall has 8 rows of chairs with 12 chairs in each row. How many chairs in total?' Rows × columns = total objects in a rectangular arrangement. Array problems are common in geometry and area contexts and appear frequently from Class 4 onward.
Multiplicative comparison
'Riya earns 4 times as much pocket money as her brother. Her brother gets ₹15 per week. How much does Riya get?' One quantity is a known multiple of another. Hard difficulty worksheets include this type — the most challenging, and the most commonly missed in Class 5 exams.

Times tables prerequisite
A child working on multiplication word problems is simultaneously managing: reading comprehension, problem-type identification, operation selection, and arithmetic. If the arithmetic (7×8) requires conscious effort, there is no mental bandwidth left for the reasoning. Fluent times table recall is the prerequisite — not a nice-to-have. If your child struggles with word problems but not bare multiplication, check their times table recall speed before assuming a word-problem reading issue.
