Algebra Worksheets — Grade 7 & 8Free Printable PDF · CBSE Class 7–8

Algebra is where arithmetic becomes a language. The equation is a sentence, the variable is the unknown word, and solving it means finding the number that makes the sentence true. Children who think this way navigate Class 7 algebra without memorising a single separate rule.

x is not a letter —
it is the number the equation is hiding.

The students who struggle with Class 7 algebra are rarely those with weak arithmetic. They are the ones who never connected the abstract symbol to a concrete idea. These worksheets build the equation-solving skill alongside the conceptual understanding that makes it stick.

🔣

Simple equations (Class 7)

Solving one-step and two-step linear equations for x. Easy worksheets begin with one-operation equations; medium worksheets extend to two-step and include negative coefficient problems.

📐

BODMAS (Class 7)

Evaluating expressions with correct order of operations — the skill that separates students who get 14 from those who get 20 for 2 + 3 × 4. Medium worksheets include nested brackets and exponents.

⚖️

Two-variable equations (Class 8)

Equations with variables on both sides — isolating x when it appears on both left and right. Hard worksheets include these and introduce algebraic identity verification.

The verification habit

Every solved equation should be checked by substituting the answer back into the original. x = 5 in 3x − 5 = 10: substitute 3(5) − 5 = 15 − 5 = 10 ✓. This takes ten seconds and catches arithmetic errors that would otherwise cost marks. CBSE Class 7 assessments explicitly award marks for checking. The hard difficulty worksheets require students to show a verification step alongside the working.

Algebra worksheets — what parents ask

x is a placeholder for a specific unknown number — the one that makes the equation true. In 2x + 3 = 11, x represents the number you can multiply by 2, add 3 to, and get exactly 11. The answer is x = 4. Framing algebra as 'find the hidden number' rather than 'work with letters' makes the transition from arithmetic concrete and intuitive for most Class 7 students.
BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. It specifies the sequence in which operations must be performed. Without a fixed order, 2 + 3 × 4 could equal 20 (add first) or 14 (multiply first). The correct answer is 14 — multiplication before addition. CBSE Class 7 introduces BODMAS formally. Hard difficulty algebra worksheets include multi-step BODMAS expressions.
An expression is a mathematical phrase with no equals sign: 2x + 3. It can be simplified or evaluated for a given value of x, but not solved. An equation states that two expressions are equal: 2x + 3 = 11. It can be solved for x. CBSE assessments use both — questions that say 'simplify' or 'evaluate' involve expressions; 'solve' or 'find x' involve equations.
Goal: isolate the variable on one side. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. For 3x − 5 = 10: add 5 to both sides → 3x = 15; divide both sides by 3 → x = 5. Verify: 3(5) − 5 = 10 ✓. The verification step is not optional in CBSE assessments — marks are awarded for checking, and it catches arithmetic errors before they cost marks.
CBSE Class 6 introduces variables and simple expressions — the idea that a letter can represent a number. Class 7 Chapter 4 covers 'Simple Equations': forming equations from word problems and solving one-step and two-step linear equations. Class 8 extends to equations with variables on both sides and algebraic identities. Easy and medium worksheets target Class 7 scope; hard worksheets cover Class 8 two-variable and identity topics.
Arithmetic trains 'find the missing answer in a calculation' (8 × ? = 48). Algebra trains 'find the unknown in a relationship' (8x − 4 = 44). The transition requires abstracting from specific operations to relationships between quantities. Students who think of equations as 'find the number that fits' transition naturally; those who approach algebra as unfamiliar notation for familiar arithmetic struggle beyond one-step problems.
