Every multiplication fact is also two division facts: 7 × 8 = 56 means 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7. Mixed word problem practice builds this three-way relationship naturally — students encounter all three forms of the same numerical relationship across different problems.

Rate problems — the hardest type

'A shop sells 8 packets of biscuits per hour. How many does it sell in 5 hours?' (multiply) vs 'A shop sells 40 packets of biscuits in 5 hours. How many per hour?' (divide). Same real-world situation, different unknown — different operation. Hard difficulty worksheets present rate problems in both forms.

The total-or-part diagnostic

The fastest operation-selection tool: if the problem gives you a total and asks you to split it, divide. If the problem asks you to find a total from equal groups or a per-unit rate, multiply. Teach this diagnostic question first — it reduces wrong-operation errors more than any amount of additional practice.

A note on the difficulty progression

Easy difficulty mixes straightforward equal-groups multiplication with simple sharing division using numbers under 50. Medium difficulty introduces rate problems and grouping division. Hard difficulty includes two-step problems, multiplicative comparison, and remainder-interpretation problems — the combination that appears in CBSE Class 4–5 assessments and which most students find the most challenging.

Mixed mult-div problems — what parents ask

Ask two questions: (1) Do you know the total? If yes, and you know the number of groups or the group size, you divide. If no, you may multiply. (2) Are you finding a total from groups, or breaking a total into parts? Finding a total from equal groups → multiply. Breaking a total into equal groups → divide. A useful framing: multiplication asks 'what is 6 groups of 8?' and division asks 'how many groups of 8 fit into 48?' or 'how many in each group if 48 is shared among 6?'
A rate problem gives a quantity per unit and asks about a different quantity. 'A car travels at 60 km per hour. How far does it travel in 3 hours?' → multiply (60 × 3). 'A car travels 180 km in 3 hours. What is its speed per hour?' → divide (180 ÷ 3). The same real-world situation produces both a multiplication and a division problem depending on which value is unknown — which is why rate problems appear in both single-operation and mixed worksheets.
If a student solves a multiplication problem and gets 56 as the answer, they can check: does 56 ÷ 7 = 8? (or whichever factor they started with). If the division gives back the original factor, the multiplication was correct. For division: multiply the quotient by the divisor to check the dividend. This mutual-checking habit builds inverse operation understanding naturally through use rather than through explanation.
Yes, at hard difficulty. Two-step problems appear from CBSE Class 4 onward: 'A factory produces 45 toys per hour. It operates for 6 hours a day. How many toys does it produce in 5 days?' This requires multiplication twice — or multiplication and then multiplication again — rather than multiplication and division in the same problem. Hard worksheets also include genuine mixed two-step problems where the first step requires one operation and the second requires the other.
CBSE Class 3 introduces both operations in word problem form with small numbers. Class 4 extends to large number problems and introduces the 'how many times' framing for division (multiplicative comparison in reverse). Class 5 mixes all four operations in word problems and expects students to identify the correct operation without structural hints.
Multiplying when they should divide because the problem contains large numbers. A child who sees '252 students need to be divided into groups of 9' and computes 252 × 9 is applying the operation associated with 'lots of something' rather than reasoning about what the problem is asking. The fix is not practicing more problems — it's teaching the diagnostic questions: Do you know the total? Are you finding a total or splitting one?
