The four-question diagnostic

Before choosing an operation, train students to ask four questions in order: (1) What do I know? (2) What am I finding? (3) Are things being combined or separated? (4) Should the answer be bigger or smaller? This sequence narrows from four possible operations to one in almost every problem — and it works equally well on easy and hard questions, making it worth teaching explicitly before starting the hard difficulty tier.

Mixed word problems — what parents ask

On a single-operation worksheet, a child can identify the operation from the title or topic context before reading the problem. On a 4-operation mixed worksheet, that shortcut disappears entirely — every problem must be read, understood, and reasoned through independently. This is the format used in every real assessment, from CBSE unit tests to standardised international papers, which is why it is the most important format to practise but the least common in typical homework packs.
CBSE Class 3 introduces all four operations formally, making it the earliest point where genuine 4-operation mixing is appropriate. Class 3 problems use small numbers (under 100) and straightforward contexts. Class 4 extends to larger numbers and two-step problems. Class 5 and 6 include multi-step problems where the correct sequence of operations must also be identified — these appear in the hard difficulty tier.
A four-question diagnostic works for any problem: (1) What quantities do I know? (2) What am I trying to find? (3) Are the quantities being combined or compared, or is one being split into parts? (4) Does the answer need to be bigger or smaller than what I started with? Combining or increasing → add or multiply. Splitting or decreasing → subtract or divide. The key distinction between multiply and divide: do you know the total (divide) or are you finding it (multiply)?
Arithmetic builds speed and accuracy with a given operation. Word problems build the prior skill of identifying which operation is needed. These are independent skills — strong arithmetic does not transfer automatically to operation selection. Children who practise only single-operation worksheets develop fast computation but have no reliable method for choosing between operations when the worksheet doesn't tell them. Mixed practice is the only way to build that selection skill.
A two-step problem requires two separate calculations to reach the final answer — the result of the first calculation is used in the second. A mixed-operation problem simply has different operations appearing across different questions on the same sheet. Hard difficulty worksheets include two-step problems: 'A shopkeeper buys 8 boxes of 12 pens each. He sells 37 pens in the morning. How many pens remain?' — this requires multiplication then subtraction in sequence.
Three steps before computing: (1) Underline the numbers and circle the question word ('how many', 'how much', 'what is the total'). (2) Identify whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than the starting numbers — this rules out half the operations immediately. (3) Restate the problem in a simpler form: 'I have X, I need to find Y — am I combining, removing, grouping, or sharing?' Only then compute. Students who skip these steps and compute first make operation-selection errors even when their arithmetic is correct.
