A note on comparison problems

The hardest type on these worksheets is the additive comparison problem — where 'more than' can require either addition or subtraction depending on which quantity is unknown. Before introducing hard difficulty, make sure your child can explain in words why each comparison problem requires the operation they chose. If they can give a correct reason, the concept is understood. If they can only say 'because I added', the reasoning isn't there yet.

Mixed add-subtract problems — what parents ask

Single-operation worksheets allow children to bypass reasoning: 'this is a multiplication worksheet, so I multiply.' Mixed worksheets remove that shortcut and require students to read each problem carefully, identify the situation, and select the operation. This is the skill that genuine mathematical reasoning requires — and it's exactly what standardised assessments test. Children who only practice blocked single-operation worksheets often struggle on mixed-format exams even when their arithmetic is strong.
Three-step approach: (1) Find all the numbers in the problem. (2) Identify which is the 'whole' and which are the 'parts' — if the whole is unknown, add; if a part is unknown, subtract. (3) Check whether the answer is bigger or smaller than the starting number — adding makes things bigger, subtracting makes them smaller. If the expected answer direction contradicts the child's calculation, they've likely picked the wrong operation.
Comparison problems state that one quantity is some amount more or less than another: 'Rahul has 7 more stickers than Kavya. Kavya has 12 stickers. How many does Rahul have?' Despite containing 'more', this requires addition (12 + 7). 'Kavya has 7 fewer stickers than Rahul. Rahul has 19. How many does Kavya have?' Despite containing 'fewer', this requires subtraction (19 - 7). The confusion arises because 'more' and 'fewer' signal a relationship, not an operation — the operation depends on which quantity is unknown.
Once a child can reliably solve 8 out of 10 single-operation problems correctly at medium difficulty, introduce mixed worksheets. The transition typically occurs around CBSE Class 2 for addition/subtraction mixing. Moving too early — before single operations are secure — causes confusion. Moving too late — keeping a child on single-operation worksheets until the exam — leaves them unprepared for the format tests actually use.
Yes, from Class 3 upward. A two-step add-subtract problem uses one operation to find an intermediate value and another to reach the answer: 'A shopkeeper had 45 oranges. He sold 17 and then received 28 more. How many does he have?' These appear in CBSE Class 3 assessments and become standard from Class 4. Hard difficulty worksheets include two-step problems.
